The Origins Centre is a registered charitable not-for-profit NGO founded in 1983.
We are a respite, retreat and community activity centre located just outside the town of Balingup, 2.5~3 hours south west of Perth, WA.
The Centre welcomes individuals and groups for respite, retreat, activities, courses and events. Accommodation, amenities and facilities are available by donation. There are private and shared rooms as well as a communal kitchen and living space. In addition, there is a beautiful 8-sided building we call the ‘Rotunda’, which is available for individual, and group activities. This space has good acoustics for music rehearsals and recitals. Our 15 acre Landcare project offers scenic walks and learning opportunities.
Mindfulness practice and Landcare are the two main in-house activities.
Both Guests and Helpers stay at Origins. Groups or individuals may access during the day. Lots have stayed or come along to something many times. There are no financial charges. People make freely given contributions financially and in kind as they can. We try to maintain an ethos that's friendly helpful and co-operative.
Guests can stay for up to two weeks. Everyone contributes a little time by looking after their room and the shared facilities. There's a special vase and envelopes where people can anonymously put financial support.
HELPERS: PEOPLE INTERESTED IN OUR ETHOS AND PROGRAM CAN BECOME HELPERS AT ORIGINS CENTRE. With the direct support and participation of Coorain managers, all Helpers contribute 2-3 hours each Monday through to Thursday mornings in exchange for private accommodation, shared facilities and access to the programs, and other courses. We all share the general supervision of Origins during weekends. Time off is arranged individually.
The Centre is surrounded by 17 acres of bushland. Currently, fifteen of our seventeen acres are becoming beautiful native parkland under an ongoing Landcare effort. We also have a herb garden and small orchard. The Centre is adjacent to the Bibbulmun Track and Balingup Brook. It's a beautiful one km walk to Balingup.
Adjoining on the west side is Coorain. The Committee of Management is responsible for all aspects of both the Origins Centre and Coorain and their respective properties. The committee of management is comprised of two people from Coorain and seven others from the local community. The Coorain residents co-manage Origins Centre.
Coorain is a special interest residence for a universalist approach to dharma teachings. Practitioners from Coorain provide continuity in management, practical work and program at the Origins Centre. They instruct mindfulness sessions, educational weekends and retreats as well as offering access to the dharma teachings at Coorain.
Finally, every Wednesday is a special ‘Open Day’ from 10am until 2pm where you can see the Centre for yourself and/or join us for a busy-bee and potluck lunch. Every second Wednesday is a wonderful Family Kindy as well. Bring something for the table to share! Lunch starts at 12:30. Looking forward to meeting you!
The Origins Centre is drug and alcohol free.
